Sydney, 2026.
2 years ago I was leaving the UK to go travelling with some mates and end up in Australia. Since I wasn't coming back, I had to clear the flat out.
We were leaving the beds but the sofas, dining table, TV, coffee table, desks, basically the whole kitchen, and all the other million things you accumulate in the space of a few years had to go.
I had to chuck a load of stuff in public bins (sorry Wandsworth council), do tip runs and ended up filling my Mum's garage with bits I thought I might want to keep for a rainy day (thanks Mum).
As we were going travelling, we tried to sell as much as we could. We posted on FB Marketplace for a while, trying to get a buyer who was legit and also get a fair price.
The concept came about when a guy arrived to pick up the sofa. At this point we still had half the kitchen to clear and I was trying to persuade him to also take the kettle, our airfryer and some pans for free as well. I just wanted the stuff gone.
This jogged my memory to 2 years prior. When we picked up that exact same sofa, the previous owner also ended up giving us about 100-150 quids worth of stuff for free, for the same reason…
So clearly I thought there must be something in this. There must be a better way of moving out. Over a number of excellent beers (Quilmes, Brahmas, Aguilas, Modelos etc.) we spent months poring over it in South America.
As things tend to go, as the money in my account steadily depleted, the thought of setting up a business had faded a bit by the time I got to Australia.
When my girlfriend and I arrived in Sydney, we had a backpack each, no jobs and definitely nowhere near enough cash. Whilst we were undeniably buzzing to be in this beautiful country, there was a definite urgency on 1) where would we live and 2) how would we pay for it.
In the process of applying/getting into jobs, we spent about three months bouncing around sublets whilst we found our feet and looked for a lease. Whilst we met some great people and stayed in some interesting places, moving constantly was draining.
So we started looking for a lease. I feel getting a lease could be another whole story but eventually we got one. An unfurnished apartment in the Eastern Suburbs.
It was an anxiety inducing thought given the state of our bank balances (and knowing my girlfriend’s home design preferences!).
We had a stroke of luck at times. The last bloke we subletted from was selling a few things, so we picked up a dining table, chairs and a TV stand from him at a good price. Other bits we found on the side of the road: a BBQ, bedside tables, a 54" TV (from Rose Bay, obviously). I ended up doing weekly reconnaissance missions on runs to find hidden gems people were giving away.
However, most of our time and money went to the never-ending maze that is Facebook Marketplace. Tonnes of back and forth, the classic "is this still available" messages, my screentime on that app was a joke.
Then what happened in London happened all over again.
The girl who was selling her fridge told us she was leaving Sydney to go back to the UK. Whilst we came for the fridge, she also gave us a bunch of small things: mugs, cutlery, chopping boards, frying pans. The kind of small stuff that helps you get started.
It saved us time, effort and money. She said she was glad she could help, and mentioned it was a full circle moment for her, as she could picture herself in our shoes when she first arrived.
Having spoken to heaps of people about this, I don't think this story is too unfamiliar to anyone.
And that's where Bundle fits in.
I've been building this so people on both sides of this situation have an easier experience than we did.
If you're moving into an unfurnished place, you should be able to get what you need in one go, at a fair price, without months of scrolling and messaging.
On the other side, when it's time to leave, like I left London, you should be able to sell it all in one go. It's nice knowing you can help someone starting the same process you once did.
